ArborCAD - Vista Windows

ArborCAD R3, ArborCAD-AE version 2.05 and ArborCAD-SE version 3.01 and onwards has been modified to increase compatibility with Vista.

Vista has a number of added security measures which are an excellent idea. Some of the new functions within Vista prevent installed programs (and their data) from being modified directly (to prevent hackers etc from interfering with data). Vista now 'tricks' any programs which attempts to access the program area, by creating a virtual (a clone) program folder for its modified data.

Unfortunately, the existing ArborCAD program needed access to the true program area (something Windows XP, etc allows). To overcome the problem a number of file storage methods within ArborCAD has been changed. Data relating to ArborCAD such as your preferences, unlock file, filters are now stored in the actual user setting space. In a similar way data relating to AutoCAD such as the icons have been relocated. The custom menu is no longer located within the AutoCAD support folder but is now within your own user setting area. To help find this file place (for when loading the custom menu into AutoCAD) a special function has been added into ArborCAD which will simply paste it into the clipboard buffer; you then simply paste it when prompted for a pathname within AutoCAD.

As the program currently stands a few problems still exist with using ArborCAD on Vista with AutoCAD. This relates to the Automation connection with full versions of AutoCAD 2006 and 2007. I have no details regarding 2008, although Autodesk say it should be 100% compatible (let me know if it works)!

All versions of AutoCAD (both FULL versions and LT versions) should work with ArborCAD on VISTA using the Script Plotting method.

All FULL versions of AutoCAD up to 2005 should work using Automation on Vista.

AutoCAD 2006 and 2007 Full versions do not currently connect with ArborCAD on Vista for Automation (but will using Script Plotting).

AutoCAD 2008 LT works on Vista  with ArborCAD.

AutoCAD 2008 FULL version is a 'don't know' at this stage (for direct connection but will work with script plotting).

So to recap, if you are using Vista, then any AutoCAD program (both Full and LT) will work with ArborCAD using the Script Plotting method.

If you are experiencing problems running AutoCAD 2006 / 2007 on  Vista then read on...

AutoCAD 2006 has a problem with Vista. It installs ok but wont actually start. The following text with solution was found on the internet and Works! It  is likely the same procedure can be used with 2007.

Recently a user in our forum has managed to get AutoCAD 2006 to work on Vista Business. Although not supported by Autodesk or networking environments here's how he did it. Taken from the Cadopolis Forum:

Open up c:\ -> Program Files -> AutoCAD 2006, then right-click on  acad.exe.
Choose properties, open up the Compatibility tab, click the button near the bottom labelled "Show Settings for All Users".
Accept the UAC messagebox, the check the box labelled "Run this program as an Administrator", click OK.
Check the box again labelled "Run this program as an Administrator", click OK and close explorer.

Now whenever you launch AutoCAD a UAC messagebox prompts you to accept  it, and you have to hit "run program" each time BUT AutoCAD  launches!
